The Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Consortium organises an annual photography competition in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Nature Photography Association (AFONIB).
In 2011, UNESCO recognised the cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana as a World Heritage Site, considering it an exceptional example of sustainable agricultural use that reveals the harmonious coexistence between humans and the environment over the centuries.
This photography contest aims to showcase all the elements that make up the cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana: the terraces, the hydraulic network, the cobbled paths, the estates and villages, and also the products grown on this difficult land.
The contest is open to anyone, amateur or professional, who wishes to enter. Entrants must be the authors of the photographs they submit and must hold the rights to them.
7th edition of the contest
The seventh edition of the contest, to be held in 2025, offers €5,700 in prizes across four categories: four first prizes of €800, eight honourable mentions worth €400 and €200, and an extra prize of €100 for the winner of the popular contest, which will be held on social media with the 12 winning photographs.
The categories of the Serra de Tramuntana Photography Competition are:
- Distintiu products and producers. Images related to products and services that have the Serra de Tramuntana Distinction (see the list here).
- Constructions, walls and margins. Ethnological elements such as dry stone constructions, margins and terraces, cobbled paths, towers and watchtowers, estates, etc.
- The world of water. Ethnological elements of the hydraulic network such as wells, waterwheels, mine springs, aqueducts, irrigation channels, canals, water mills, washing places, cisterns, washers, etc.
- Experiences. Cultural events, popular festivals, mountaineering and hiking, heritage visits, etc.
The photographs submitted must be accompanied by a caption or description indicating, among other things, the category in which they are being submitted and the location where they were taken, and there can be no reference to the author.
The images must have been taken after 1 January 2023 within the boundaries of the Distintiu Serra de Tramuntana map (see here).
The deadline for registering for the contest is from 26 September to 9 October 2025, both inclusive.
Each participant may submit a maximum of 6 photographs to the competition, with a maximum of 3 per category. Only digital files in JPEG format are accepted, in any orientation, with a minimum resolution of 1920 pixels on the long side.
At the bottom of this page, you can download the complete rules of the competition.
