Forest management

The gradual abandonment of traditional agricultural and forestry activities in the Serra de Tramuntana has led to the uncontrolled expansion of the Mediterranean forest. This situation has increased the area’s vulnerability to fires, pests and storms. Forest management is once again a strategic priority.

The Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Consortium is launching a project involving clearing, prevention and the sustainable use of timber in several municipalities within the Serra. Specifically, this will involve clearing undergrowth in areas close to built-up areas, creating safety verges along paths and roads, removing fallen or damaged trees, and carrying out silvicultural treatments to improve the structure and biodiversity of the forests.

A total investment of €1.78 million is planned up to 2027, funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax.

This project combines landscape conservation, risk prevention, job creation and the enhancement of forest heritage.

Actions by municipality

In total, 142 hectares of the Serra de Tramuntana, spread across 18 municipalities, are set to be cleared.
