Robert Graves

Robert Ranke Graves was born in Wimbledon, London, in 1895. He fought in World War I, and was seriously wounded in the Battle of the Somme. He settled in Deià in 1929 with his partner Laura Riding, an American writer, and lived in the house called Ca sa Salerosa for some time, before moving to Ca n’Alluny, from where he published several of his works and those of other writers. In 1929 he published Goodbye to all that, and in 1934 his most famous work, I, Claudius.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936 Graves and Riding had to leave Mallorca. They lived in Switzerland, France and the United States, where they separated. Graves returned to England and started a relationship with Beryl Hodge, and in 1946 they both returned to Deià. He died in 1985, and lies at rest in Deià cemetery.
